Partnership success for Dynamic Earth, Multi-Cultural Family Base and Science Ceilidh

Dynamic Earth and Science Ceilidh have teamed up to deliver a STEM Summer Club for the young people from Multi Cultural Family Base’s Safe Haven Group.

Multi-Cultural Family Base (MCFB) are an Edinburgh-based charity working with young people who are refugees and those who have been affected by trauma in their home country, and in their journey to the UK. Over the last 3 years, Dynamic Earth’s Community Team has been building a partnership with these incredible young people and the brilliant staff from MCFB – with the award-winning Science Ceilidh.

The Summer Club has been a brilliant success and set an exciting expectation that the children would return next summer…and the next!

Having just wrapped up the third year of the MCFB Summer Camp, read on to celebrate the successes of the club and the achievements of the young people.

‘I wish if the camp was much longer than three days, I enjoyed everything about the camp and don’t feel like leaving!’ (Saleem, 12)

‘I love this team, everyone seems to work from their heart and really want us to have a good time, that’s why I come every year. The children always enjoy their time here too’ (Raja, parent)

A key focus of this club was providing a safe space for the young people to explore science & engineering in an interactive and engaging way, whilst getting chance to meet scientists, engineers, make new friends and socialise.

The young people were involved in lots of activities, including building boats, launching mini rockets, studying butterflies and creating artwork.

Diline, MCFB’s group coordinator said The summer camp in partnership with Dynamic Earth and support from Science Ceilidh was the highlight of the summer for our Safe Haven families. With the cost of living crisis and the lack of free activities in Edinburgh, most of the children and families spent their summer at home. The camp was a great opportunity for the children to get out and experience meaningful activities with a variety of engineering, music, nature, football and many learnings about the Earth and other planets.’

The strength in this project lay in the partnership between Science Ceilidh, MCFB and Dynamic Earth and the development of the partnership year on year. This led to the young people building relationships with staff and with each other, and coming away with a feeling that science is for them and Dynamic Earth was a safe space to learn and have fun with friends.
