DYNAMIC EARTH BRINGS SCIENCE TO YOUNG PATIENTS THROUGH ONGOING HOSPITAL PARTNERSHIP
Dynamic Earth brings hands-on science experiences directly to children in hospital, as its partnership with Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity continues throughout 2025 and 2026.
Since June 2025, the programme has reached 170 patients—both inpatients and outpatients—alongside 163 family members and supporters. For many of these young people, visiting Dynamic Earth in person is not possible, making these sessions a vital way to ensure access to inspiring and educational experiences.
Across 16 hospital visits and one visit to Dynamic Earth, the programme has included ward-based sessions, Youth Group workshops, and portable planetarium experiences. Activities have explored themes such as space, dinosaurs, rainforests, extreme environments and the ocean, with sessions often delivered one-to-one and tailored to each child.
During one recent visit, a young patient who initially seemed anxious quickly became immersed in the session. As he began sharing his extensive knowledge about spiders, his confidence grew, and the room shifted from uncertainty to excitement. When a clinician entered to carry out treatment, the activity continued seamlessly, providing a reassuring distraction. The clinician even joined in, and through this shared moment, the young person began to build trust with clinical staff.
“It’s an honour to visit the hospital each month and meet so many different young people. Their enthusiasm is genuinely inspiring, and I’ve had some really insightful and memorable conversations during our sessions. This partnership means a great deal to us, and we’re really looking forward to seeing how it continues to grow.”
– Emma Clark, Dynamic Earth Community Manager
The partnership reflects a shared commitment to improving wellbeing, offering moments of curiosity, creativity and connection alongside medical care. Monthly ward visits will continue, and plans for more portable planetarium visits are taking shape, ensuring even more young people can experience the wonder of science during their time in hospital.
